Overview
I am a clinical psychologist currently based in Child and Adolescent Mental Health in NHS Tayside. My clinical practice draws on variety of psychological interventions, including CBT, TF-CBT, DBT, ACT, and CFT. My research interests are in prevention and prediction of suicide, masculinity and mental health, and child and adolescent mental health. My research to date has allowed me to work across disciplines including endocrinology, behavioural ecology, immunology, and evolutionary, social, and clinical psychology. I have published widely across disciplines and received funding from, for example, NHS Tayside, MRC, Wellcome Trust, Carnegie, and the Richard Benjamin Trust. I established and led the Tayside Suicide Research Network (2016-2018) which was a collaboration of over 100 academics and professionals from across Tayside, with the aim of knowledge sharing and research collaboration to better understand suicide. I led an active research group (Evolution & Behaviour @ Dundee) of undergraduate, postgraduate, and postdoctoral researchers (2012-2018). I have received American Association of Suicidology Training in Psychological Autopsy. I have held the position of Associate Editor for the journal Evolutionary Psychology. I am the Psychological Research Champion for NHS Tayside, and in this role I lead on promoting an active research culture by providing direct support with research as well as strategic leadership.

Teaching
I have taught research methods, evolution and behaviour, and personality and individual differences across undergraduate and postgraduate levels. At the University of Dundee I was deputy director for MSc programmes and programme leader for the MSc in Psychology of Mental Health, a competitive and popular programme which I ran in collaboration with clinical psychologists from NHS Tayside. I have taught a number of modules with the Open University (DE100, SDK100, SDK228). I have supervised widely across undergraduate, postgraduate and postdoctoral levels.
Funding
I have received funding from the Richard Benjamin Trust to carry out research into the causes of emotional distress across Scotland (for which I collaborated with NHS 24 and the Scottish Government’s Mental Health Team), the Medical Research Council, the Human Behaviour and Evolution Society, the British Academy, and the Carnegie Trust. Most recently (2018) I was awarded funding from the Wellcome Trust to carry out a knowledge exchange/public engagement project (Dundee & Me) in which I worked with local primary schools and mental health service users to explore links between our local environment and mood (for a short video on the project, please see https://vimeo.com/286493064).
Administrative and Community Contributions
I have held the position of Associate Editor for the journal Evolutionary Psychology (2015-2017), and am a member of the Human Behavior and Evolution Society, the Animal Behaviour Society, the Association for Child and Adolescent Mental Health, and the European Human Behavior and Evolution Society. I am a member of the British Psychology Society (BPS, Chartered Membership), the Division of Clinical Psychology (DCP, Full Membership), and the Association for Child and Adolescent Mental Health (ACAMH).
